Thoughts on How to Make the Learning Stick

At the beginning of each gaming session I ask the kids a series of questions and give tiny bits of candy (e.g., a single M&M) for correct answers. Last time we did this I asked rules-related questions like which dice to use for attacks and why we roll initiative. While familiarity with the rules does make for a smoother gaming experience, I think there is potential to use this technique for greater good.

Next time I'm going to start with questions about the words we learned last week.

  1. I think a reinforcement session, reviewing rules or vocabulary or having a fun quiz about strange creatures or powers they have encountered, is a great idea.

I doubt, though, that even a tiny bit of candy is necessary for the purpose. I'd consider making the quiz session itself competitive in some way, or making it comical (must answer in the voice of some character from your adventure, or in Pig Latin, or backwards).

No real beef, here. I just tend to avoid treat rewards for learning.
